Your Own Website (Feb 5, 2006)

Do you ever feel like you have something to say to the entire world? Ever get a feeling that someone in India, Mexico, California, or maybe just Barren County, Kentucky might benefit from your thoughts and insights? Maybe you just feel at times a little distant from the rest of the world and need to connect. Well, you are not alone. In fact, if that describes you then you are probably like most other folks on this big floating hunk of rock we call Earth. The good news is that you can easily make that connection with the rest of the world, and without paying a fortune in long distance charges. The simple solution is to just create your own web page.
Now, I can hear many of you saying something like, ‘I have no idea how and I certainly don’t have the time to learn.’ Before you go off to read something else and, perhaps, hope that I’ll have something a little more interesting next week, let me let you in on a little secret: there is very little to learn, if you have time to send an email then you do have the time, and it costs you nothing. Oh, and if you are lucky and make an interesting site you can actually make some money. Don’t get me wrong; I mean, you probably won’t get rich or anything. But, you could help out that bank account balance occasionally.
There are a number of websites that allow you to create free web pages and even choose from a list of pre-defined templates to make your page look really snazzy. I recommend checking out Geocities (geocities.yahoo.com) and Angelfire (www.angelfire.lycos.com). These are two very popular websites that allow you to create a free and nice looking page. If you are into Blogging, then take a look at Blogger.com. One thing to take note of, however, is that most or all free sites will show ads on your pages.
If you are the adventurous type, you should take the plunge and buy your own domain name (like MikeBryant.com). This is not nearly as expensive as you might think, and can cost less than $10 per year to own your own little piece of internet real estate. With this option, you can also get a very personalized email address (mike@MikeBryant.com, for instance). With your own domain name, you will have to pay to host the site, but there are many companies that sell hosting for a very low cost. I suggest purchasing domain names through GoDaddy.com.
Now, for the Cool Site of the Week... Since we’ve been discussing how you can let the entire planet know your thoughts, why stop there? Why not let the whole universe in on the fun? With sites like www.bloginspace.com and www.messageintospace.com, you can actually type messages that will be transmitted by radio into space. How cool is that!
As always, if you have any questions or suggestions for future articles, please email me at mike@MikeBryant.com.
