Multi-Function Printers (April 24, 2006)

Printers these days just do not seem to last as long as they should. Chances are, then, that at some point in the not-too-distant future, you may well find yourself in need of a new printer for your computer. If you do, perhaps you may want to consider an MFC. What's an MFC, you ask? Excellent question.
MFC stands for 'Multi Function Center' and is a combination printer, scanner, photocopier and perhaps even a fax machine all in one. If you ever need to scan photos, make copies or send faxes one of these little MFC jewels may just be the thing for you. An MFC almost always contains a pretty decent color printer that will use the same print cartridges as any other printer. Of course, as with most things in life you get what you pay for, but a fairly respectable MFC that will print in color, fax (black and white or color), scan, and even provide you with a color photocopier can be had for less then $300. I know that for a fact since I paid only $280 or so for mine.
If you never need to scan photos and only need the services of a fax machine or photocopier rarely, then an MFC is not for you. But, if you somehow find yourself too often in the position of trying to make a mad dash to town before some business closes so you can send a fax... Well, I found myself in that position a little too often and an MFC has been a lifesaver.
Now, for the Cool Site of the Week... I admit it-- when I need to lookup a phone number, instead of simply picking up the phone book I will walk all the way to the end of the house, sit down at the computer and lookup my number online. Don't ask me why, I don't know. The same is true for looking up a word in the dictionary. Why look through a big ol' book when you can go to AskOxford.com and lookup the word? This site has a great free dictionary and also has some neat word games (Crosswords, Hangman, etc) you can play.
As always, if you have any comments or questions please email me at mike@MikeBryant.com.
