Breathitt County's Official Website (July 31, 2006)

You know, here in the beautiful mountains of Eastern Kentucky, we have a pretty good thing going.  I mean, there are plenty of ‘outdoors-ey’ things to do, crime is relatively low, people are friendly, we’re just a short drive away to a lot of great places to visit, and people here are, well, just generally good people.  There is a great sense of community and a feeling of being welcome here.  That is something that I missed during my time living in the unfriendly— and often downright rude—city of Atlanta.  And that was the so-called friendly south.  Of course, everything around here isn’t perfect, and one thing we are definitely missing is an abundance of good paying jobs in the area.  They say you can’t have it all…

Well, I don’t know who these mysterious ‘They’ are that say you can’t have it all, but I would like for one of these people to tell me exactly why it is that we can’t.  The mountains are home to some of the hardest working people on the planet.  Indeed, the work ethic of the Scots-Irish is legendary.  Of course, one way to get companies to take notice of the great opportunities that await both them and us is via the web, and that is the topic of this week’s article.

In an effort to bolster potential employers’ interest and to also help citizens keep informed, Breathitt County now has an official web site, BreathittCounty.org.  This site has tons of interesting information and statistics to show prospective employers exactly how nice it is to live and work here.  Also, there is a page dedicated to local organizations and a business directory.  Any business or group can simply click on a link to request that they be added to the directory.

Beyond that, the site has a Community Events calendar to show visitors to the site what’s going on in the area.  Churches, schools, local government agencies, and others can submit information to be listed on the calendar.  I would like to encourage everyone to visit the site, submit events for the calendar, and please also make suggestions on how the site can be improved.

As always, if you have any questions or suggestions for future articles, please email me at mike@MikeBryant.com.
